Treating Migraine Pain with IV Therapy

Updated: Aug 29, 2023

Suffering from migraine pain? IV therapy may be able to help.

A migraine is more than just a severe headache, it is a neurological disease that affects 18% of women and 6% of men in the United States. A migraine episode can last a few hours up to 3 to 4 days. Migraines are caused by a number of different factors which can range from genetics, dehydration, alcohol, skipping meals, caffeine withdrawal, hormones, changes in sleep, as well as changes in humidity, temperature, and/or air pressure.

Migraines are often associated with not drinking enough water. Staying hydrated can help treat the recurring symptoms of migraines and headaches. Drinking sugary drinks like sodas and overly sweetened coffees can leave your body more dehydrated as both sugar and caffeine have diuretic properties. This will cause your system to lose even more water and lead you into dehydration. When dehydrated, the amount of fluid available to your brain reduces, causing your blood vessels to contract and the pain that you feel.

Some of the conditions or symptoms that are associated with migraines are:

  • Pulsating headaches

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Sensitivity to light and sound

  • Pain behind one eye or ear

  • Temporary vision loss

  • Weakness

Proper hydration can help treat and even prevent recurring migraines and headaches. IV hydration therapy contains fluids, electrolytes, vitamins, optional anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory addons to improve the symptoms of migraines. The fluids and vitamins are bypassing the GI tract and are absorbed directly into the bloodstream. An IV for migraine pain is the fastest way to replace lost fluids and getting you back to your daily routine.

In most cases, we recommend our Myer's Cocktail IV drip with added medications for patients combating severe migraine symptoms.

This saline solution includes the following ingredients known to help with migraine symptoms:

  • Vitamin B complex and B12: Vitamin B12 and other B vitamins have been shown to reduce the severity of migraine with aura, and vitamin B12 supplements are commonly used to prevent migraine attacks.

  • Magnesium: Magnesium sulfate administered intravenously has successfully treated patients who have migraine with aura. In migraine patients without aura, magnesium did not reduce pain or nausea, but it did decrease sensitivity to light and sound. Magnesium can also prevent the onset of migraines when it's taken regularly.

Add-in medications that we recommend for migraine pain are:

  • NSAID: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory pain medications are used to help with severe pain in migraine patients. It's more powerful than an over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen.

  • Zofran (ondansetron): Zofran is an anti-nausea drug that can help to reduce nausea and vomiting in migraine patients with such symptoms.
